We’re proud to sign The Climate Pledge

We live, work, and run as part of a global community. The planet is our home. And because more than 150 million people worldwide run outside, it’s critical we take care of it.

Why we signed The Climate Pledge

Brooks believes that climate change demands urgent and universal action. Our efforts in this area span a decade, and we recently adopted a new roadmap to reduce scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions in line with climate science and to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040 – ten years ahead of the goal set by The Paris Agreement.

In recognition of our dedication to addressing climate change now, and in the future, Brooks is proud to sign The Climate Pledge. In September 2019, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to meet The Paris Agreement 10 years early. The landmark Paris Agreement set out a unanimous response to keep a global temperature rise below 1.5ºC. To have a strong chance of staying below 1.5ºC, global carbon emissions must reach net zero by 2050, and the earlier we get there, the stronger our chances become. The actions we take between 2020 and 2030 are fundamental to avoiding further tipping points: this is the decade that will determine whether we can meet the global goal for net zero carbon.

How we’re taking action

Brooks is the first athletic brand and among the first 40 companies in the world to sign the Pledge. We stand with Amazon, Global Optimism and the other signatories of The Climate Pledge, who are publicly committing to being carbon neutral by 2040. As a signatory of The Climate Pledge, we agree to:

  • Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis.
  • Implement decarbonization strategies in line with The Paris Agreement through real business change and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies.
  • Take actions to neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially beneficial offsets to achieve net zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.

Change requires all of us

Partnerships will be critical to achieving these ambitious goals. “The Paris Agreement set out a unifying roadmap for all countries and all people to address the climate crisis by taking action,” said Christiana Figueres, the UN’s former climate change chief and Global Optimism founding partner. “By joining The Climate Pledge, signatories are not just making a statement of commitment to the future, they are setting a pathway to significant actions and investments that will create jobs, spur innovation, regenerate the natural environment and help consumers to buy better starting now.

By joining The Climate Pledge, we are reinforcing our 2030 strategy to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of climate change and overconsumption, and our ongoing commitment to sustainability. We look forward to sharing more information and exciting announcements about these initiatives in 2021. Doing what’s right for people and the planet is a lifelong race. And we’re running it.
