It is an extremely durable shoe that shows little to no deterioration after 150+ miles. I am training for the Tahoe 200 right now, and I would have little hesitation keeping this shoe in the quiver rotation.
There is nothing fancy about this shoe. And in today's world of carbon plates and "super shoes" that is not a bad thing. It just does it's job and does a dang good job at it.
It fits true to size and the lockdown is great. It's a no fuss shoe and it's worth a consideration.
Brooks Running gave me this product for free to try. But, I'll most likely be purchasing another pair.
The lug design is a standout feature, outperforming more aggressive-looking options in my collection with stellar grip and traction. However, I would love to see more lugs near the exterior of the shoe, angled outward like cleats. If this was paired with horizontal lugs running up the shoe’s toe, it could significantly enhance grip on steep terrain. Especially in Northern MN, where we have ice, snow, and muddy terrain a large part of the year, this is one area where I've found most trail shoes fall short.
The breathable upper ensures comfort during runs and dries quickly when wet which is a huge plus for unpredictable trail conditions. Its lightweight design is another highlight, holding up well under regular use. While only time will reveal how the materials wear down, the durability so far has been excellent compared to other leading brands.
Overall, this shoe strikes a great balance of essential trail shoe features, catering to both seasoned and new trail runners. It’s an exceptional value at its price point, and with a few tweaks to lug placement and propulsion, it could truly set a new standard for trail shoes.
This is my first Brooks shoe to try, and I've been pleasantly surprised. It won't be enough to move the rest of my shoes over, but I am happy that Brooks gave me this free product to try.

This is a completely candid review free of biases, as this is my first Brooks product. I have nothing invested in this shoe because Brooks gave me this feel product to try.
First Impressions:
Right out of the box, the Caldera 8 stood out for its lightweight feel and comfortable fit, though the midsole felt slightly firm at first. The aggressive tread pattern and wide base immediately gave the impression that these shoes were built for stability and traction on rugged terrain. The design blends a streamlined look with a tough, adventure-ready construction, making them feel just as suited for long runs as they are for challenging conditions.
Trail Performance:
To put these shoes to the test, I took them out on single-track trails in the hills of Nevada, featuring a mix of loose gravel, rocky outcrops, and steep climbs and descents. Right away, the grip and traction stood out on both packed dirt and looser surfaces, the outsole provided solid footing with no slipping, even on tricky downhill sections.
The toe box offers ample space without feeling too loose, allowing my feet to move naturally while preventing discomfort as they swelled on longer runs. What really impressed me was the cushioning, the Nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam not only absorbs impact well but also adds to the shoe’s sleek yet rugged aesthetic. After 20 miles on challenging desert terrain, I haven’t noticed any early signs of wear, which speaks to their durability.
Pros & Considerations:
Stable & Supportive: The wider base provides extra confidence on technical terrain.
Great Traction: Handles loose, rocky, and uneven trails with ease.
Well-Cushioned & Comfortable: The midsole offers plenty of support for longer runs.
Breathable & Durable: The upper material keeps feet cool while holding up against rough terrain.
Something to Note:
On my first run, I experienced a slight hot spot on my arch. However, after my second outing (and every run since), the issue disappeared completely. It’s likely a break-in period adjustment, which can vary depending on foot shape and running style.
Final Verdict:
For those new to trail running or looking for a solid long-distance option, the Brooks Caldera 8 is an excellent choice. It offers a balance of comfort, stability, and grip, making it well-suited for a variety of terrains. Whether you’re tackling steep climbs, navigating rocky trails, or logging high-mileage runs, these shoes deliver a reliable and smooth experience on the trail.
If you’re considering an upgrade or just getting into trail running, these are definitely worth a look! Thank you Brooks and thank you EV!
One subtraction is that the 8's don't have the built in gaiter velcro back or catch on the laces. Doesn't bother me, but if you like gaiters, just be aware.
I think these shoes are workhorses that can take a lot of miles. Overall I see improvements compared to past generations of the shoes and recommend them.
