The size and fit are consistent with my other Brooks shoes. I like the roomy toe box in Brooks and these don't disappoint. They have a very secure fit around the mid foot. They are remarkably light for trail runners. My size 12 weighs 11oz, which is only slightly heavier than my Brooks Ghosts. Yet they have both better cushioning and much better grip.
The dark teal-blue colorway with the bright orange band is quite attractive. The fabric is breathable and remains comfortable during long runs. Being 200lb, I was concerned about the durability of plated trail runners, but I've used these enough now that I don't think it's a concern. The energy return is excellent, even at my moderate pace.
Overall I can't find much to complain about. The only thing I missed versus previous trail runs is the slightly muted terrain feel. But given the cushioning, grip and energy return, I think it's more than a fair trade off. I would highly recommend these for trail runs.
First, they look fantastic. The colors are vibrant and bold, and also very pleasing to the eye. The blue-green color is so nice and goes with a wide variety of colors for clothing.
The fit is superb. True to size, comfortable, with plenty of room to move toes without any heel slippage. They are cushioned and sturdy, with good support.
Even though these are trail shoes, I am in a job where I am on my feet all day in a hospital, and these have felt wonderful at work. The cushion is great, and if I have to run or move quickly to a situation, the traction is excellent. Thus, I use them for multiple purposes.
The shoes are very comfortable, supportive and stylish. They are great for walking and running. The grip of the bottom leads to a feeling of security while running or walking on slippery or uneven ground. We live in an area with ice and sleet and this helps even with walking the kids to school. I like the style and look. The colors are fun. All around fantastic shoe. I would not change anything.
First off, they fit true to size, which means I didn’t have to play Cinderella with six different sizes. Out on the trails, they were like a trusty hiking buddy—grippy enough to handle mud and snow without face-planting, but not so aggressive that walking on flat surfaces felt like a punishment. The soles are Goldilocks perfect.
The fabric? It does the trick. It wicks moisture and dries so fast it’s like it forgot it was wet in the first place. Plus, the dark color scheme hides the shame of your muddy adventures, while the orange soles are perfect for saying, “I’m here, don’t run me over.”
My only gripe? The laces. I’d much prefer regular laces that don’t require a PhD in knot-tying.
All in all, these shoes made me feel like I could conquer the trails without slipping, soaking, or sulking. 10/10, would recommend—just bring a pair of new laces.
The tread is medium grippy. On my local trail, there are some steep sections that are usually slippery when coming down with a typical running shoe. When wearing the Catamounts I felt very secure. I decided to try them out on some areas where I usually don’t descend and they did well on those too. On one of the runs, I tried to go downhill through a damp grassy section and the shoes were able to grip without any loss of traction.
The cushioning was enough to really dampen out any feeling of running on woodchips and small rocks. Even on rough terrain the cushioning is enough that it doesn’t greatly affect my ability to run.
As a more heavy-set runner, I appreciate that these shoes have kept my knees free from pain. I can’t put my finger on what Brooks does, but the ergonomics of the shoe definitely has been noticeable in reducing pain in my knees when compared to some other shoes. Even after some longer runs my knees and ankles are pain free allowing me to get more running in.
The upper fabric of the shoe is breathable and feels very comfortable. The color scheme looks cool, but not overly aggressive. I think they look very stylish. I like the laces too which are a thinner design that seems to hold knots a little better.
The only thing I would change on these shoes would be to increase the lace length by about an extra inch on each side so that it’s easier to tie the shoes on when using heel locks. When not using heel locks, the shoe can ride up and down on my heel which is less comfortable.
Overall, I definitely like these shoes. My knees are happy and the footing is secure on uneven terrain. I am recommending these to my friends.
Starting with the breathable mesh uppers, the material used has held up really well and seems very durable. In a couple runs so far, no fraying fibers visible as these shoes still look brand new!
I navigate paved roads on the way to the local trail system and the tread on the outsole responds perfectly to both conditions. Some trail shoes feel like trail shoes, where the traction can almost feel like you’re wearing cleats - not these! The nubs offer good traction in all-terrains, even in wet or dry surfaces.
For the feel inside, the cushioning is comfortable, supportive, and feels premium - which is what I’ve come to expect from a traditional Brooks’ product!
Overall, I have been very happy with these shoes and would recommend to all trail runners! This pair of Brooks shoes fits true to size and is consistent with all other previous pairs of Brooks I’ve owned, another kudos to the brand!
