I am looking for other options beyond the Brooks Cascadia's (still the best IMO) I've been running in for a few seasons and I was excited when Brooks gave these to me to try for free. Let me start by saying this is the wrong shoe for me, but it might not be for you. I pronate and I have had good luck with Brooks trail shoes but these did not provide enough support. My PT said they it looked like they made me pronate more because of the taller stack height (oops!).
The fit is pretty standard for Brooks. Maybe a touch wider in the toe box than their road shoes but not ridiculous. The mesh upper is nice and breathes well but still is my number one gripe with Brooks trail shoes because it makes your toes dusty. Normally fine but it's weird when your toes feel chalky in very dusty environments. I thought I was going to dislike the black and white colorway but actually found it rather appealing.
The ride is very plush (32.5mm stack height!) and felt great on mellow single track and gravel. It didn't feel as stable on very uneven terrain, likely due to my pronating ankles. I run primarily on techy single track and tall stack shoes often make me feel more like I'm running on stilts and harder to change direction and maneuver loose trail. They're not particularly sensitive (as expected) but provided great cushioning from rocks and other sharp things that I feel a lot more in less plush shoes. The midsole seemed fine; it didn't feel particularly responsive but it also wasn't dead weight like some other max cushion shoes. I did feel a big sluggish at some points but there are too many confounding factors to really draw a conclusion.
The traction of the sole was great and performed as expected on slick rock, loose pea gravel, and dirt alike. The Caldera picked up a bit more mud than I expected but it wasn't unreasonable (the mud was really sticky).
Overall, I think Brooks did a good job with this shoe. It doesn't stand out in any category but it gets the job done and it's comfy while doing it. If Brooks fits your foot well and you're looking for a ton of cushion, this is a great shoe for you.
